Nobility in Chur Raetia: the Victoriden
Chur Raetia as a region developed from the Roman province of Raetia Prima, originally congruent with the diocese of Chur. In the 7th–8th centuries noble families known as the Zacconen/Victoriden established themselves here as local Lords (in German).Map: Raetian Museum

One of the few testimonies to the noble Victoriden family is this grave stone from the 8th century. Its inscription is only fragmentary and no longer shows the name of the deceased. However, we know the place of origin of the marble – the Vinschgau.Photo: Raetian Museum

For a long time the stone slab lay on the grave of the bishop’s master minter, Hans Jacob Wägerich of Bernau (1562‒1606), on the Scaletta cemetery in Chur. Its reverse with the original inscription was rediscovered by chance during renovation work in 1972.Photo: Raetian Museum
