Burgher Goblet from Chur

Probably South Germany, 1670-1680
Deposit of the Churer Burgergemeinde [Citizen Council]

The drinking vessel in the form of a Steinbock [ibex] of gold-plated silver and with removable head-part comes from the Chur city hall. As of the 16th century, large quantities of silver came from America to Europe and caused the prices to drop. Now the wealthy bourgeoisie could also afford so-called «silver-ware». Animal goblets were especially prestigious.

Gold and silversmiths also established themselves in Chur. The museum collection shows that they mostly produced simple silver ware for daily use. Show pieces, however, come from other cities especially from Zürich or Augsburg.
