Freiherren-diploma for Franz Thomas von Schauenstein (1662‒1742)
Vienna, 1739
Item on loan from the State Archive Graubünden (StAGR A I/02b Nr. 257)
With this document Thomas Franz von Schauenstein was granted the title of count by the Habsburg emperor Charles VI. The aristocratic Schauenstein family had been among Graubünden‘s upper class for centuries. Thomas Franz pursued a military career in Austrian service, achieving the rank of general.
During the first decades, the museum also collected archival documents such as this patent of nobility. Later this function was transferred to the State Archive Graubünden. Hence the Museum handed over its inventories of written documents to the Archive in 2006, where they are kept today.
