Nail Board from the Nail Smithy Schilling

Chur, 1889‒1919

In rural areas of Graubünden artisan production was meagre. Necessary products were usually imported, distributed by peddlers or sold at local markets. This was different in the towns especially in Chur, and also along the transit routes where artisanal enterprises could establish themselves more easily. This becomes evident from the numerous tools and instruments in the collection.

This nail board comes from the last Graubünden nail smithy that was run in the old part of Chur until 1919. The Museum took over the entire workshop inventory from this company in order to understand the complete craft process.
