Newspaper «Der Alpenbothe»
Chur, 1794
As early as the beginning of the 18th century, periodical newspapers were published in Graubünden in all cantonal languages. They informed the population about economic, geographical, literary or historical topics. For political discussions and polemics, however, pamphlets were usually used.
Even though the «Alpenbothe» described itself as a political newspaper, not a single news item concerning Graubünden politics could be found in its 18 issues.
The first and, for a long time only, really political Graubünden newspaper was the «Churer Zeitung», which was published from 1800 onwards. It was only when press censorship was lifted as of 1831 that the development towards journalism in a modern sense was made possible.
