Model of the Uniform of a Graubünden «Landjäger» around 1850

Chur, mid 20th century

After the creation of the canton of Graubünden in 1803, a centralized police force was established. Eight former Graubünden soldiers served as the first «Landjäger» [cantonal police officers]. In the decades that followed the policemen regularly complained about lacking the means to carry out their work. They did not even have a uniform.

It was not until 1937 that the Grand Council authorised standard equipment. Our model shows the mid-19th century uniform of a Graubünden cantonal policeman. A characteristic item is the Piedmontese Bersaglieri hat, introduced in 1855. The template for this model was provided by a depiction of the «Landjäger» Kaspar Branger (1809‒1884) from Saas in the Prättigau.
