Steinbocktruhe [ibex chest] from the Surses

Savognin, 1576

Before one had wardrobes, washing or other household effects were kept in chests. The carved «Steinböcke» and the lateral late Gothic ornaments make our exhibit especially attractive. These types of «Wangentruhen» where the sides of the chest are extended downwards to serve as feet were manufactured by local artisans in the Engadine and the Oberhalbstein from the 16th century onwards. They are considered a forerunner of the Oberhalbstein «Steinbocktruhe».

A collection always mirrors the specific interests of the respective directors. Under the directorship of Hans Erb our collection of chests grew to over 250 examples between 1960 and 1976.
