Raft Hook

Zizers, undated

Since the Middle Ages, rivers were the most important and cheapest transport routes. On the Rhine, rafts brought people and goods direction Lake Constance. The start was at the earliest in Reichenau because the difficult water conditions further upstream hardly allowed a raft trip.

Especially the raw material wood was transported by water. At the drift when the water was high, logs were sent on their journey. With raft hooks such as our object logs and rafts could be maneuvered.

The regulation of forest-use by new forestry laws, but also the development of land transport routes, put and end to Graubünden’s Rhine rafting in the outgoing 19th century.
