Human hair as material for pieces of jewellery or pictures? In the 19^th century delicate keepsakes made of braided hair were highly popular as presents among friends, as love-favours or as remembrance of the deceased. The bride often gave the bridegroom a watch chain made of her own hair as a wedding present. This symbolised the ever-lasting marital bond.

These small works of art were made by skilful hairdressers or also by nuns as monastery works. The hair was laced, braided or woven. Today there are only a few hair artists who can master this technique.
