Banner of the Grey League
Graubünden, after 1512
Each of the three Leagues had its own coat of arms as a sign of political independence. This flag‘s originally red silk fabric features the Grey League’s white and grey cross.
Flags were treated with special reverence. Correspondingly, the flag-bearers had great responsibility: They had to vow to protect the military insignia from thieves and moths in wooden troughs and even to keep their wives and children away from them if necessary.
Today, the collection consists of more than 200 flags – including military loot, but also flags of musical societies, youth organisations and other religious, political and commercial associations.
