Club and Ball for the Game «Mazza Cula»
Heinzenberg, undated
The game «Mazza Cula» is played in the open country on the Heinzenberg in spring after the thawing of the snow and in autumn after the grazing period. The «mazza» (club) is composed of a wooden shaft and a wooden head. As «cula» (ball), a dyed darning ball made of wood is used.
This «Alpine golf» is played by two teams that compete against each other. Hitting the ball in the air requires dexterity. Instead of a hole, the goal is to hit a barn door, a stone, a pole or a fir. The Mazza game has gained in popularity in recent years and is on the «Liste der lebendigen Traditionen in der Schweiz» [List of Enduring Traditions in Switzerland].
