The Chamber of Marvels. 150 Years Rhaetian Museum
Since the Baroque era princes or wealthy citizens in many places liked to collect exceptional objects, which they presented in so-called chambers of marvels. In doing so they usually did not care to limit themselves to strict collecting concepts: specimens from nature, art objects, antiques and curiosities. Here everything came together in gaily coloured and fascinating combination.
The modern museum, as we know it today, is a middle-class invention of the 19th century. At the time new exhibition houses emerged all over Europe. The Rhaetian Museum also opened in the year 1872.
Since then the museum is collecting. By now its inventory includes approximately 100’000 objects. For the anniversary we want to invite you on a discovery tour of its treasures based on 150 exhibits. For each year since the opening one object was chosen that found its way into the collection in that particular year. Thus the exhibition shows a representative cross-section: the precious, the ancient and the rare can be found here just as well as the surprising, the trivial or the weird, all side by side entirely in the style of the former chamber of marvels.
