Grave Cross

Lantsch, 1st half of 20th century

The cemetery belonging to the St. Mary’s Church of Lantsch/Lenz is one of the most beautiful in Graubünden. Its iron crosses in the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles are a characteristic feature. Many of them have adorned the graves of the local families for a long time and are continuously reused. Possibly, the origin of this cross with the solar disk in the middle also dates back even further than its documentation suggests.

As of 1966, the cemetery regulations in Lantsch state that only hand-forged iron crosses may be erected. Today, the cemetery thus appears like a single, unique entity. Moreover, 62 crosses of this kind have found their way into the Museum’s collection.
