Engadine, mid 17^th century

The name betrays the function: In «Kammtaschen» toiletries and other odds and ends were kept. They were usually made of fabric occasionally also of wood or other materials and were richly decorated in a wide range of techniques. Particularly in the Engadine they were embroidered in bright colours similar to the local costumes. By hanging them on the wall next to the mirror they also served as room decoration.

Our exhibit is made of brown embroidered satin silk and shows, beside flower motifs and allegorical female figures, an alliance emblem: It refers to the marriage of Pastor Johann Jakob Vedrosi with Margareth von Stampa around 1653.
