Picture Postcards from the Collection of Peter Wolf (1917‒2011)

Chur, mainly 1st half 20th century

72 albums full of picture postcards! In 2013 we bought what is probably the largest Graubünden picture postcard collection. Since then we have been working at making an inventory of the many thousands of cards.

We owe this collection to the transport entrepreneur Peter Wolf (1917‒2011) from Chur. For decades he had collected picture postcards from the early period of tourism.

The picture postcard was introduced as a simple alternative to the letter in 1870 and immediately enjoyed great popularity. A few years later the Zürich lithographer Hans Jakob Schmid developed the photochromic process. Now you could also send your holiday greetings from the mountains in colour.
