Military Service Badge of the Austrian Army for Baron Daniel von Salis (1826‒1919)

At the tender age of 14 Daniel von Salis-Soglio enrolled in the engineering academy in Vienna. When he was 19, he was already promoted to lieutenant. A long and remarkable career in Austrian service followed. In its course he did not only become commander of an infantry regiment, but also achieved political eminence. In recognition of his services, he was awarded this badge during his career.

As a member of the von Salis family he could look back on a distinguished military tradition. Until the 18th century, the von Salis were the most successful mercenary entrepreneurs in Graubünden and held high office at home and abroad.
