Jewel Casket

Most likely Venice, 18th century

This casket was brought home from the lagoon city by Peter Conradin von Planta (1742‒1822), envoy of the Free State of the Three Leagues in Venice. It serves as a reminder of his failed diplomatic mission in the year 1766.Despite his efforts, he could not convince the doge’s representatives to renew the alliance of 1706, which had been terminated two years earlier.

For the many emigrants from Graubünden participating in Venice’s economy, mostly as owners of confectionaries, liquor shops or as scissors-grinders, this had drastic consequences. Approximately 3000 merchants and tradesmen had to leave the city.
