«La sacra Biblia», Bible in the Romansh Language

Scuol, 1679

The first print shops in Graubünden were established in the course of the Reformation. The new teachings were spread by means of printed texts such as bibles, devotional or hymn books. Whereas printed material from Germany and Italy could be obtained from abroad, Romansh books were mostly produced in domestic print shops. In 1560 the first Bible in Romansh was published, the New Testament by Jachiam Bifrun.

In order to produce religious books in the Romansh language, the pastors Jon Pitschen Saluz und Jachen Andri Dorta founded a print shop in Scuol in 1660. Their most monumental work was the 1679 Bible in folio format exhibited here.
