Late Mediaeval Coin Find

Stampa-Maloja, 1333‒1390

Not far from the summit of the Maloja pass, children found one of the largest coin hoards in Graubünden so far. There were two wooden boxes filled with 6 gold and 362 silver coins, which were quickly sold to several buyers. The Museum subsequently managed to buy back all the coins and to reunite them in the collection.

The hoard find includes mainly Lombardy coinages from Milan and Pavia. A few coins originate from Genoa, Venice and the region of Southern Germany.

Just as most Late Mediaeval coin finds in the collection the coins from Maloja were found beside an important mountain pass road. They may have belonged to a traveller or a merchant.
