Prism Jug of Heinrich Wilhelm Lange

Chur, 1842‒1848

In the city of Chur various important pewterers were active. The creator of this elegant jug, Heinrich Wilhelm Lange (1798‒1848), was not from Chur. He was from Germany and came here as a 25-year-old, well-trained journeyman.

At that time the guilds controlled the entire urban life. As immigrant Lange could not become a guild member himself. Even for his marriage to the widow of the master pewter-smith Hitz he needed the consent of the town authority. Only after the abolition of the guilds in 1840 was he allowed to run the foundry under his own name.

The Chur art of pewter casting is represented in the collection with about 200 objects.
