Soglio, around 1820

The silver filigree brooch is part of an ensemble consisting of a collar necklace, diadem, ear pendant and a flower bouquet holder. These pieces of jewellery were worn by the Salis-Soglio family at weddings and other high festivities. The ensemble was last used at the «Calvenfeier» [Battle of Calven anniversary celebration] in 1899.

Filigree jewellery dates back to antiquity and was widely used in the 19^th century, also in traditional costume fashion. It is made from fine wire that is twisted into a cord and subsequently rolled flat. The results are thin, delicate metal threads that can be formed into motifs. By putting such motifs together, a lace-like structure is created.
