Coin Find with Roman Denarii

Fläsch, 32/31 BC–181/182 AD

This find of 24 Roman silver denarii was discovered on the so-called «Römerweg» [Romans’ Road]. This road leading up to the top of the St. Luzisteig pass was an important transit route for the north-south trade at the time.

The coins may have originally been part of a small purse. During the rule of emperor Commodus (180‒192) it accidentally got lost, or perhapsit was buried intentionally. The coins’ purchasing power was almost equal to the monthly wage of a legionary.

The Museum’s collection includes over 20 coin hoards from Graubünden, of which only two more date back to Roman times.
