Vacuum Cleaner of the Brand «Electrolux»

Chur, 1929

What is a modern, electric household appliance, made in Sweden, doing in the collection of the Raetian Museum? History lasts until this moment – accordingly, contemporary objects are also collected. It does not necessarily always have to involve products from Graubünden. It suffices that they were used here and, as so-called «Schwellenobjekte» [threshold objects], they are an example for changed lifestyle habits. In this case: for the electrification of households.

Up until the 1950s such a vacuum cleaner remained a luxury appliance. The time saving for housewives, promised in advertising at the time, however, was shattered again by the rising standards of hygiene.
