Topographic Map of the Canton of Raetia

Basel, 1802

When this map was published, Graubünden had been integrated into the Helvetic Republic for three years. It illustrates the territorial losses, which the former Free State of the Three Leagues had to accept in 1797: Napoleon granted the former subject territories Valtellina, Chiavenna and Bormio to the Cisalpine Republic. This was because Graubünden had missed several opportunities to reform its old political order.

The collection includes approximately 200 topograhic maps, primarily of Graubünden. The oldest map is from the middle of the 16th century, the collection’s main focus is on the 18th and 19th centuries.
