Faience Plate with Crest of the Family von Planta

probably northern Italy, 2nd half 17th century

From the beginning ceramics belonged to the most important sections of the collection. The objects were donated to the Museum or deliberately purchased from antique dealers. Today the collection includes over one thousand ceramic pieces.

To be sure, there were small pottery businesses in Graubünden itself that produced simple kitchenware. However, the more representative items were already imported in the 17th century. Especially faience ware such as this plate was popular with the leading Graubünden families. These pieces are mostly white-glazed, painted earthenware. Our plate shows the crest of the family von Planta with a black bear’s paw and its origin is Italy.
