Faience Table Centrepiece from the Family von Salis

Strasbourg, around 1754-1762

Among the Raetian Museum’s 170 Faience objects three tableware sets from the 18th century stand out especially: One of them is the large dinner service, which museum director Fritz Jecklin was able to buy from the estate of Andreas von Salis in 1895.

It consists of 34 parts, of plates, over platters and sauceboats up to the sugar bowl. It was produced in the manufactory of Paul Hannong in Strasbourg. The town was then an important production centre in Europe for exclusive ceramics. The entire service is decorated with extremely detailed and finely painted flowers based on French engraving patterns.
