Coin of the League of the House of God

Chur, presumably 1564

The so-called «Steinbocktaler» [ibex coin] of the League of the House of God is probably the best-known Graubünden coin. The Museum bought this example from a dealer in Amsterdam.

The stamp for this rare silver coin was engraved by the famous Zürich medallist Hans-Jakob Stampfer (1505-1579). Today there are still approximately 15 pieces of this coin known.

The «Steinbocktaler» is one of the most outstanding coins of the numismatic department at the Museum. It contains about 20’000 objects related to monetary and economic history. Included are 500 Graubünden coins and medals, probably the largest collection of this kind.
