Eucharist Chalice

Malix, early 14th century
Depositary of the Protestant Church Malix

Up to the Reformation our object was used during the Eucharist Sacrament of the Catholic Mass. 1526 Malix converted to the new faith, from then on the chalice was used in the reformed church service. Thereby it was at the heart of one of the great questions of faith of that time: namely, whether Christ’s body and blood were actually present in the bread and wine of the Holy Communion as the Catholic and Lutheran church teaches, or symbolically as the Zwinglian-reformed denomination advocates.

On grounds of its poor state of conservation the Protestant church finally handed over the silver chalice to the Raetian Museum where it was restored.
