Davos, Sertig, 1717

With the advent of domestic clocks the family Ambühl in the Sertig near Davos began making wooden wheel clocks based on the model of iron clocks. Such clocks were now affordable for the rural population. Our example was once hanging in the Stafelalp. It is equipped with a carved hour hand with a three-forked tip and a crescent moon at the end. Below is the quarter-hour hand with its own clock face.

Up until 1840 about 900 wooden wheel clocks were manufactured in the Sertig according to the same principle. The import, as of 1820, of the industrially produced, more accurate and cheaper Black Forest clocks put an end to the Davos clocks.
