Steeple Cock

Tamins, end of 17th century

«Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times», Jesus prophesied to Peter. And according to the New Testament he was to be proven right.

While there are crosses at the tops of Catholic churches, the steeple cock is a distinctive mark of Reformed churches in Switzerland. In keeping with the biblical story it can be understood as a symbol of integrity and forgiveness.

After a fire, a new steeple was built in Tamins in 1692. This cock, which had probably been designed by the Tamins coppersmith Samuel Broder, was placed on top of it. In 1899 this steeple also had to make way for a new one and the cock found its way into the Raetian Museum.
