London, 1708

This etching by Johann Melchior Füssli was done in 1708, according to a preliminary drawing by Johann Jacob Scheuchzer. It represents the castle complex of Hohenrätien near Sils in the Domleschg and was already described as a ruin in the 15^th century. It lies high above the Viamala ravine on a once important trade route across the Alps. The legend of knight Cuno is well known, the last lord of the castle Hoch Rialt, who plunged into the ravine together with his horse.
